Duties and Responsibilities
  • Reporting to Enterprise Systems Manager.
  • Required to produce a “standard build” and documentation for Windows 2000/2003 server builds.
  • Required to build a number of stand-alone and rack-mounted servers for special projects.
  • Required to provide consultancy and technical support to NT team.
  • Required to assist with implementation of Veritas NetBackup across dedicated gigabit network.
  • Monitor requests for change and trouble tickets assigned through Remedy help desk system.
Achievements
  • Conducted a security survey of all managed NT servers, produced report detailing weaknesses, and method to implement security patches and fixes.

Department of Works & Pensions (Platform Standardisation Project)

Metropolitan Local Government Authority providing IT services to approximately 8000 users, located in large central sites and smaller regional offices such as Maintenance Depots and One Stop Shops. IT budgets are a combination of Departmental spend, and central IT Services. Eight discrete projects, ranging in length from 3 -15 months.

IT Services Department (Server Standardisation Project)

Role

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Reporting to PC-LAN Manager.
  • Required to provide consultancy and technical support to upgrade team.
Achievements
  • Able to bring technical experience and detailed knowledge of the Council’s business requirements, leading to a very smooth and successful standardisation of 120 Netware 4 servers in preparation for upgrade to Netware 5/6. Applied fine-tuning techniques to the documented upgrade process which resulted in highly stable and standardised servers

IT Services (Backup and Disaster Recovery Upgrade Project)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting to IT Services Manager.
  • Required to isolate a suitable product to upgrade the corporate PC-LAN server backup to reduce risk and improve the effectiveness of backup and disaster recovery

Achievements

  • Produced a report detailing the difficulties support personnel were experiencing with Arcserve 6 and deficiencies in the corporate backup policy. Evaluated, reported and advised on industry leading backup products. Devised, detailed and documented an implementation of 150 server, city-wide rollout of Yosemite TapeWare. Created technical support and user documentation. Diagnosed bedding-in issues, modified methodology and established work-arounds as required. Trained and handed on to permanent staff for completion. Continued to provide consultancy as required

IT Services (Netware SFTIII Upgrade Project)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting to IT Services Manager.
  • Required to manage a project, which was initially intended to stabilise 12 central corporate SFT111 servers. During this period the decision was taken to roll out a combination of Netware 5 and 6, thereby dictating that these servers be downgraded to native NW4.11 prior to upgrade.

Achievements

  • Developed resilient specification for central departmental server hardware to replace mirrored SFTIII. Negotiated budgetary approval from individual departments for IT spend. Used MS Project to establish a project timeline, plan equipment and human resources and track progress. Created working documentation, and trained staff to carry out server builds and replacements. Reported progress to IT Services Manager.

IT Services (Server Support)

  • Team Leader (deputising for permanent staff)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting to PC-LAN Manager
  • Required to carry out all the routine tasks of support team management

Achievements

  • Established a job prioritisation scheme. Reduced call backlog by targeting ‘sticky’ jobs and assigning appropriate staff. Brought call resolution times within SLA. Negotiated new call handling procedures to improve effectiveness. Analysed and reported on inappropriate data access levels for support staff. Revised departmental security strategy to correct flaws in data access rights. Wrote a report highlighting a number of unsecured access points for malicious virus threats, and changes required to routine procedures to improve data security. Trained and mentored staff.

  • Required to install four discrete training networks

Achievements

  • Adjusted existing NW4 "NDS and Security Standards Document" to include changes and additions specific to Netware 5. Successfully configured and installed four Netware 5.1 servers, and training environments, ranging from 15 to 120 users, utilising Compaq servers, Compaq PCs, and Apple Macs. Utilised ZENworks and Windows policies to protect desktops, server and data against accidental and malicious alteration. Trained permanent staff to administer and operate network and NDS.

Leeds Learning Network (Schools Internet Connection Project)

Role

  • Technical Consultant

Duties and responsibilities

  • Reporting to Project Manager.
  • As part of the government initiative to provide Internet access to schools. To carry out site surveys in schools within the Leeds LEA in preparation for installation of managed ISDN routers and Internet software

Achievements

  • Arranged visits to listed schools, meeting with Head Teachers and ICT Co-ordinators in order to locate, and evaluate the existing IT infrastructure and suitability of Windows NT4 servers and workstations. Resolved IP configuration issues as required. Gathered lists of pupils and staff from which to generate secure logins. Created reports on each school providing special instructions to the installation teams. Wrote letters to each school, highlighting any pre-installation works, and providing quotes for work and materials as appropriate. Diagnosed and resolved any issues arising following Internet installation.

  • Created NDS tree and Security Standards Document. Designed a "model network infrastructure" for use in LCC training environments. Configured and installed a Netware 4.11 server and training PCs. Utilised ZENworks and Windows policies to protect desktops and server against accidental and malicious alteration. Configured Sophos Anti-virus to provide a ring-fenced data solution. Reviewed existing firewall configuration to ensure controlled Internet access for training research and protection of departmental data. Resolved general problems on all existing training networks. Consulted on an extension of Project 2000 (see below) to Department of training staff network

IT Services - Project 2000

Role

  • Reporting to Project Team Leader.
  • Required to build Compaq fileservers and transfer user data from existing Netware 3 installations

Achievements

  • Configured and installed 23x Compaq Proliant 1600 and 9x Proliant 6000 fileservers, including RAID and SFTIII. Installed and configured Managewise, Arcserve and Inoculan. Successfully backed up and transferred user data from old servers. Liaised with Comms Team to resolve WAN/router conflicts Designed, documented and implemented a corporate Arcserve rotation schedule. Consulted with print, desktop teams, and customers on server related issues.

Year 2000 Project

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting to IT Manager.
  • Required to manage the corporate Year 2000 desktop project, reporting to the Board and ensuring that the century transition did not impact the company’s ability to continue trading.

Achievements

  • Audited and documented existing company IT infrastructure. Planned and scheduled tasks and milestones using MS Project, monitored progress through to successful conclusion. Collated manufacturer hardware and software compliance statements. Analysed routine processes in order to minimize business risks. Proved and documented test procedures and remedial actions. Monitored software vendors for latest news on compliance. Advised on correct software versions and date configurations. Y2K had zero impact on the company.

Server Replacement Project

  • Reporting to IT Manager.
  • Required to produce a strategy, and to replace existing IT provision in line with business requirements.

Achievements

  • Provided an analysis of requirement and suggested solutions for infrastructure upgrade and alignment. Installed Novell 4 server and client workstations. Designed and configured a secure and effective IT environment geared to Sales and Marketing. Migrated Banyan users and data to new infrastructure. Installed and configured remote print-servers and queues. Installed and configured Backup Exec to multiple servers. Standardized, stabilized and secured the network environment across multiple sites, and documented accordingly. Seamlessly redesigned NDS tree to reflect corporate structure.

Netware 4 and Windows NT4 Upgrade Project

Role

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting to Divisional Team Leader.
  • Required to participate in the ongoing support of existing Netware 3/Windows 3 environment.
  • Required to assist with the upgrade to Netware 4/Windows NT4 at multiple Transco sites across Scotland and Northern England.

Achievements

  • Installed and configured Netware 4.11 fileservers. Installed and configured Windows NT workstations. Configured application delivery using ZENworks. Configured and troubleshot Arcserve backup.

Server Rationalisation Project

Role

  • Reporting to IBM Project Manager.
  • Required to participate with, and act as liaison officer between, remote IBM project team and ICI Headquarters staff.

Achievements

  • Produced a report highlighting the business need, and appropriate security measures to protect commercial confidentiality. Participated in the development of "Standard" hardware and software configuration. Participated in the testing and documentation of a method for auto upgrade of clients. Specific responsibility to specify and document the hardware and software for a Site Backup and Disaster Recovery Plan.

British Aerospace October 1995 to June 1997

Prestwick, Scotland

Jetstream Aircraft Division, building civilian aircraft components in collusion with Toulouse, France. Approximately 300 workstations spread across 12 hangars and offices, LAN and WAN connections to other Aerospace sites throughout Britain.

Role

  • Netware Consultant

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting to Desktop Services Manager.
  • Required to assess, recommend improvements to, and action an overall site IT infrastructure upgrade. Numerous minor niggles were contributing to a loss of confidence in the outsourced IT contract (CSC). Inexperience had led to ineffective security and working practises were contributing to the business risk.

Achievements

  • Audited the site infrastructure, and compiled reports incorporating: upgrade recommendations, recommended modifications, security improvements, standard desktop environment, and standard file server installation. Improved the site Netware 4.1 installations to the standards defined above. Created new NDS from scratch and transferred existing users to new structure with full cognisance of business requirements. Trained permanent network administrators in Netware 4 (from v3) and transferred responsibilities and routines. Continued in advisory role. Conducted a ‘one-year-on’ audit of the Novell installation and its use across all business units. Compiled reports for each business unit and overall site, identifying potential zero cost improvements in efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Reporting to Professional Services Manager.
  • Required to demonstrate how Lotus Notes could benefit Divisional efficiency and reduce reliance on complex paper-based methods. Methodology had to fit within stringent CAA regulations for the supply of aircraft components.

Achievements

  • Advised on methods to incorporate Lotus Notes into routine tasks of computer service department, and to use this to demonstrate its potential to Aerospace management. Responsible for delivery of a project to provide account managers across the UK with industry news, project progress information and other miscellaneous company information. Developed prototype databases, forms and views to handle the above. Enabled significant operational efficiencies to be made within the computer department problem handling procedures. Convinced senior Aerospace managers that Notes could provide the required ‘guaranteed signatory authority’ for component plans and modifications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reporting to Desktop Services Manager.
  • To resolve the persistent corruptions in the customer’s cc:Mail post offices, and to prepare for and liaise with the HP OpenMail integration team.

Achievements

  • Diagnosed problems with disparate versions of cc:Mail, and inconsistencies in user accounts. Deleted and re-created inconsistent and corrupt user accounts, importing existing email to the new accounts. Modified all usernames to enable a smooth integration with the corporate HP OpenMail project. Liaised with the OpenMail team to resolve client issues raised following successful integration.
